Canes' Staal leaves team for personal reasons

01/06/2010 - Raleigh, NC (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Carolina Hurricanes president and general manager Jim Rutherford announced Wednesday that center Eric Staal has been granted a personal leave of absence following the death of his sister-in-law, Tamara Stephenson.

Stephenson passed away on Tuesday after a long battle with cancer. She was 26.

Staal has returned to Thunder Bay, Ontario, and it is not yet known how long he will be away from the team.

In 31 games this season, Staal has eight goals and 27 points.
