Clippers' Griffin to have season-ending surgery

01/13/2010 - Los Angeles, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Los Angeles Clippers rookie forward Blake Griffin will have knee surgery, the team announced Wednesday, ending his season before he had an opportunity to play.

Griffin, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 draft, has not played in the regular season because of the stress fracture of his left patella he suffered in the Clippers' last preseason game, on October 23.

Two months after he suffered the injury, Griffin was cleared to increase his rehabilitation workload after having a CT scan and MRI exam.

But the team said Griffin experienced some discomfort and was examined Tuesday, when it was discovered his healing had not improved as expected. Because of that, Griffin will have surgery and miss 4-to-6 months. There is no official date yet for the surgery.

Griffin was taken first overall by the Clippers after a standout college career at Oklahoma. He was named the 2009 National Player of the Year after averaging 22.7 points and 14.4 rebounds in his sophomore season for the Sooners. The 20-year-old also led the nation in rebounding and double- doubles (30) and helped Oklahoma advance to the Elite Eight in the 2009 NCAA Tournament.

With the playoffs about two months away, the top two teams in the Western Conference are the clear cut leaders to win the NBA Championship. In the Eastern Conference, the Pistons (32-19) are the favorites to win it all at 6-1. The addition of Chris Webber seems to have been a good move for the Pistons.  Since coming over from the 76ers, Webber has averaged 13.1 PPG and 7.3 RPG and the Pistons are 11-4.  Even though the defending champion Heat are currently on the playoff making cusp, they are the Eastern Conference team that is getting the most action to win it all (9-1).  The fact that Shaquille O’Neal is back in the starting lineup after missing 39 games probably has something to do with this.  No doubt, Shaq makes a difference when in the lineup as their winning six out of their last seven would indicate.
