01/26/2010 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - It has been over two years since the Ottawa Senators last won seven straight games. It has been just as long since they beat the New Jersey Devils.
Ottawa looks to extend its season-high six-game winning streak and halt a nine-game slide to New Jersey tonight in a matchup at Scotiabank Place.
Health has been a big part of the Senators' recent surge. Prior to their six- game winning streak, Ottawa had lost five straight from January 5-12 while playing without forwards Daniel Alfredsson and Jason Spezza due to injury. Left wing Milan Michalek also missed three games on that skid while hurt.
However, Alfredsson has been in the lineup for each of Ottawa's last five games after recovering from a shoulder injury, posting five goals and four assists, while Michalek has played the last two games. Spezza was the last to return, hitting the ice for the first time in 21 games due to a knee injury and scoring in Saturday's 2-1 victory over Boston.
Alfredsson also scored and Brian Elliott made 32 saves for the Senators, who last won seven straight during an eight-game win streak from October 13- November 6, 2007.
"I think we got some key players back and our system is being executed very well," Elliott said. "I think teams are having trouble with that."
Elliott, though, also deserves some credit. He has been in net for each of the last four wins, posting a 1.25 goals-against average and earning the NHL's Top Star for his play last week.
Overall, the Senators are outscoring their opponents, 20-7, over their winning streak and now trail the Buffalo Sabres by seven points for first place in the Northeast Division.
Ottawa will hope its current hot streak can get the club its first victory over the Devils since a win at New Jersey on October 27, 2007, a triumph that came during its last eight-game win streak. The Devils have won nine straight since in the series, including all three meetings this year.
New Jersey has also won four straight at Ottawa since a loss there on October 8, 2007.
Elliott is 0-3-0 with a 3.34 GAA in his career versus the Devils, picking up a pair of losses to them this season. New Jersey netminder Martin Brodeur owns 34 career victories against the Senators, including a 3-0-0 mark and 1.67 GAA versus them in 2009-10.
Brodeur has won his last six starts versus the Senators and made 20 saves in Saturday's 4-2 win over the New York Islanders. Zach Parise scored twice and Bryce Salvador had the game-winning goal for the Devils, who had lost four of five coming in.
"Over the last few games we've been moving [the puck] around better than we had been," Parise said. "It's just the way it's been going for us, but maybe now we'll gain some confidence from this."
Devils captain Jamie Langenbrunner halted a nine-game goal-scoring drought with a tally and has two goals and five points in three games versus the Sens this year.
New Jersey halted a three-game road losing streak with Saturday's win and plays the middle portion of a three-game road trip tonight. The Atlantic Division-leading Devils have 69 points on the year, three back of the Washington Capitals for the most in the Eastern Conference.

The 2009 AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year odds have been released and Denver Broncos' running back Knowshon Moreno has been made the opening favorite.
Moreno was selected in the first round of April's NFL draft and is expected to carry the rushing load for the Broncos this season. And with Jay Cutler now in Chicago, Moreno might be expected to be Denver's entire offense.
Betting Lines from sports betting lines have made Moreno a 5/2 favorite to win this year's Offensive Rookie of the Year Award. Fellow running back Chris “Beanie” Wells (Arizona Cardinals) is right behind Moreno at 7/2, while Donald Brown (Indianapolis Colts) and receiver Michael Crabtree (San Francisco 49ers) are 5/1 to win. Quarterbacks Mark Sanchez (New York Jets) and Matthew Stafford (Detroit Lions) are 7/1 and 8/1, respectively.
A couple of players who present some value are Josh Freeman, Shonn Green and Darrius Heyward-Bey.
Freeman needs to beat out Byron Leftwich to become the starting quarterback of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but if he does, he has a lot or raw talent and could use the weapons around him (i.e. Kellen Winslow Jr. and Antonio Bryant) to be very successful in his first season.
Green enters a crowded backfield in New York, but considering both Thomas Jones and Leon Washington are unhappy about their contract situations and might holdout, the former Iowa product could become the Jets' primary back.
Everyone was shocked when Al Davis took Heyward-Bey with the eighth overall pick in April's draft, but the kid has a tremendous amount of talent and if quarterback JaMarcus Russell takes the next step this year, the former Maryland product could blossom. Plus, Heyward-Bey will be looking to prove the people wrong who said Oakland should have taken Michael Crabtree with the No. 8 pick.
And if you're looking for a deep sleeper, check out Pat White at 30/1. He enters the Miami Dolphins vaunted “Wild Cat” offense and could be a big time playmaker.
