01/14/2010 - Flushing, NY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The New York Mets said they didn't get a chance to review Carlos Beltran's medical condition before the outfielder decided to have surgery on his ailing right knee.
Mets assistant general manager John Ricco said Beltran requested to meet with his personal physician, Dr. Richard Steadman. On Tuesday, Steadman recommended surgery for Beltran, who went ahead with the procedure a day later.
Beltran is expected to be sidelined for 12 weeks, which means he'll likely miss the start of the regular season.
The issue the Mets had apparently was the team wanted a third opinion on Beltran's knee. Ricco said the team told Beltran and his agent, Scott Boras, not to have surgery until they could review Steadman's diagnosis. That didn't happen.
"It's disappointing on a couple of different levels," Ricco said. "First and foremost, we have one of our best players we thought was progressing. He was back healthy and ready to contribute to a championship team this season. Now we find out we're going to be without his services for the early part of the season."
Beltran started having trouble with his right knee in the middle of May of last season and had a lengthy stay on the disabled list with what the team maintained was a deep bone bruise.
"The procedure that was done specifically yesterday was to clean cartilage that was present in the knee and he trimmed off some bone spurs," Ricco said. "It was a general clean-up of the knee, which was designed to alleviate the symptoms and help him be pain free."
Beltran missed 2 1/2 months of the 2009 season and was limited to 81 games. He returned in September and, according to the team's medical update, had not been experiencing pain following the conclusion of the season and into his early offseason conditioning. However, the symptoms returned to the point where pre-spring training conditioning became too painful.
The 32-year-old's initial timetable for a return would have him resuming baseball activities three days after the regular season is scheduled to begin on April 4.
The switch-hitting center fielder hit .325 with 48 runs batted in, 10 homers and 11 stolen bases last season for the Mets.
