Galaxy, Chivas USA set for first installment of SuperClasico

03/31/2010 - Carson, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Chivas USA squares off against the Los Angeles Galaxy at The Home Depot Center in the first installment of the SuperClasico between the two Major League Soccer rivals on Thursday night.

The two L.A.-based squads are coming off opposite results to open their respective seasons on Saturday, with the Galaxy (1-0-0) earning a 1-0 win over New England, and the Goats suffering a 1-0 loss vs. Colorado.

"It might take us a few games to really get into a good rhythm," Chivas USA coach Martin Vasquez told MLSsoccer.com after Saturday's match. "But hopefully we can get into rhythm as soon as possible."

Obviously being shut out at home is not the way Vasquez wanted to start his reign as Chivas USA's new head coach. After the dreadful offensive performance, creating chances against the Galaxy will be a priority.

"Our plays kept breaking down because we couldn't connect our passes in the attacking third," Vasquez said. "If we are going to create opportunities, we need to be sharper and more effective in the offensive third."

The Galaxy weren't much better on the offensive end on Saturday night, with one key difference: they scored a goal to get the three points.

"We're certainly happy with the three points in the opening game," Los Angeles coach Bruce Arena told MLSsoccer.com after the win. "We struggled last year to get the three points. However our performance is certainly incomplete over the 90 minutes. We were sloppy in the first 10 minutes of the second half. I thought our passing could have been better throughout the night."

The Galaxy goal was actually scored on a free kick after a defensive breakdown by New England left forward Edson Buddle alone in the center of the penalty area. The striker headed home a Landon Donovan service early in the first half, and that was basically all the Galaxy offense could muster.

But the fact that the club was able to get over the hump this year, after being second in MLS last season with 12 ties, is reason for optimism.

"That game last year we probably tie, we probably get a draw out of it," Galaxy defender Todd Dunivant told MLSsoccer.com. "This is a good start and we build on it and we've got to get a killer instinct and put teams away when we have the opportunity."

Both teams are relatively healthy heading into the game, with Galaxy defender, Gregg Berhalter, midfielders Jovan Kirovski, Eddie Lewis and Clint Mathis, and forwards Alan Gordon and Bryan Jordan all questionable with knocks.

Chivas USA will probably be without midfielder Ben Zemanski, while goalkeeper Zach Thornton and forward Maicon Santos are probable.
