Also, Columbus was without its leading scorer Guillermo Barros Schelotto because of suspension.
"We have a deep team. We showed that last year," Crew coach Robert Warzycha told mlssoccer.com. "I told everybody before the game I had a lot of confidence going into the game."
Midfielder Eddie Gaven had a goal and an assist in the final 10 minutes of the first half after being moved to forward to lead the Crew to victory. Jason Garey, who started the game at forward, switched with Gaven and moved back to the midfield about 15 minutes into the game.
"It was decided before the game," Warzycha said of the move. "We came with two straight forwards [Steven Lenhart and Garey], but we knew after 15 minutes we were going to put Eddie over there because that is how we wanted to play and surprise them a little bit, which worked."
The Wizards (2-3-2) are currently on a five-game winless run, and hope to catch a tired Crew squad on Sunday. Defense, or a lack thereof, has been the Achilles heal of Kansas City during its current stretch, something it hopes to correct.
"We really just want to concentrate on putting together a performance that we're proud of," K.C.defender Jimmy Conrad told mlssoccer.com. "I think we've let ourselves down in different parts of the game. It's not necessarily how we're playing as a team but lapses in concentration in key moments."
The Wizards most recent result was a 2-2 draw with Chicago, a game that the club hopes to build on after it came back from two goals down to earn a share of the points.
"MLS is a grind," Kansas City assistant coach Zoran Savic told mlssoccer.com. "It's a long season, and we can't get bogged down in the first five, eight or 10 games. We're going to look at the duration. Where we were when we started, where we are today and where we want to be as a team going forward."

They are part of the game and most of the time nothing can be done to control them. However, turnovers are contagious and they can carry over from game to game and season to season.
It’s important to know how to forecast these unforeseen events and how to use them to your advantage. You can find ways to give yourself an edge by looking at past histories of teams and coaches and how they have fared in turnover wars in the past. Instead of turnovers hurting you at the wrong times, find ways to use them to your advantage.
As you can see, college football handicapping is very labor intensive and isn’t just based on where teams are ranked in the AP and coaches polls. Experience, coaching and match-ups are all important since unlike the NFL, college teams turn over much more often with new personnel at most positions every single year. Keeping current on this information is vital.
